AFRICA/EGITTO - Ucciso il Vescovo copto ortodosso Epiphanius, Abate del Monastero di San Macario
Il Cairo (Agenzia Fides) – Permangono dubbi e incertezze sulle circostanze dell'omicidio del vescovo copto ortodosso Epiphanius, Abate del monastero di San Macario il Grande (Dayr Abū Maqār), trovato senza vita all'interno del monastero all'alba di domenica 29 luglio. Lo ha confermato una nota ufficiale diffusa domenica sera da padre Boulos Hallym, aggiungendo che la data per i funerali del vescovo potrà essere fissata e comunicata solo quando saranno terminate le indagini disposte dalle autorità giudiziarie all'interno del monastero.
Il corpo di Anba Epiphanius è stato rinvenuto in una pozza di sangue, all'interno del monastero, lungo il tragitto che dalla sua cella conduceva alla chiesa, dove il vescovo si stava recando per iniziare la giornata con l'ufficio delle preghiere mattutine. Secondo indiscrezioni filtrate sui media egiziani, il vescovo sarebbe stato colpito alla testa con un un oggetto pesante e appuntito. Siti locali parlano di “atto criminale” e “atto terroristico”, ma al momento le indagini non hanno ancora fornito indicazioni sulla matrice del fatto di sangue.
64 anni, nativo di Tanta, laureato in medicina, Anba Epiphanius era entrato nel Monastero di San Macario, nella regione del Wadi Natrun, nel 1984, e era stato ordinato sacerdote nel 2002. Ricercatore e studioso, aveva lavorato alla traduzione dal greco all'arabo di diversi libri della Bibbia, prendendo parte anche alla decima Conferenza internazionale di studi copti, svoltasi a Roma nel 2012. I 100 monaci del Monastero di San Macario lo avevano eletto a maggioranza come proprio abate il 3 febbraio 2013. Discepolo di Matta el Meskin – padre spirituale e figura chiave nella storia recente della Chiesa copta ortodossa – Anba Epiphanius viveva intensi rapporti di comunione spirituale con amici e comunità monastiche della Chiesa cattolica.
Anche il Patriarca copto ortodsso Tawadros II ha inviato propri delegati presso il monastero per avere informazioni dirette sue ricerche intorno al tragico evento. (GV) (Agenzia Fides 30/7/2018).
